Delfina Marquez Cameron was born in Ajo, Arizona, at one of the earliest Hia-Ced O’odham villages named, Moik-vahia, on January 15, 1933. Her parents are Meterio Marquez and Manuela Orozco. Her mother passed on when she was about 10 or 11 months. Delfina was raised by her paternal great-grandparents, Louis and Maria Ortega, at the Darby Wells Village.

She Attended Ajo Public School from 1939 to graduating in May 1952, when she later moved to Los Angeles, California, in search of jobs in 1953. Delfina married in California and had 5 children (3 boys and 2 girls). She retired as a letter-carrier with the United Ststes Postal Service in 1985, and moved back to Laveen, Arizona, where she currently resides. Delfina has three living sisters and one brother.

Delfina’s hobbies include: sewing, planting vegetables/melons, drawing, and harvesting saguaro fruit for her syrup.

Delfina currently sits on the Hia-Ced Hemajkam, LLC where she was a part of making history by assisting in the establishment of the Tohono O’odham Nation’s 12th District, the Hia-Ced District. She is proud in knowing that she had a part in acquiring and establishing a place to call home for her people. Delfina is thankful of current and past board members and to relatives who have passed on and were instrumental in search of land for many, many years.
