David Martínez is an enrolled member of the Gila River Indian Community. In addition to being Akimel O'odham through his maternal grandfather (Simon Lewis), he is Hia Ced O'odham through his grandmother (Margaret Lewis, née Childs). Equally important, David is an associate professor of American Indian Studies at Arizona State University. Among his publications are included: “Pulling Down the Clouds: The O’odham Intellectual Tradition During a Time of Famine,” which appeared in the American Indian Quarterly; and, “Hiding in the Shadows of History: Revitalizing Hia C-ed O’odham Peoplehood,” which appeared in the Journal of the Southwest. He lives in Tempe with his wife Sharon Suzuki-Martinez, an accomplished Japanese-American poet.
